Want us to tan your hide for you?
Here are some tips to help you get the best quality.
Curing Hints
The better you cure your skin the better the end product is going to be.
• Try not to drag the animal. • Skin the animal ASAP. Within 6 hours the bacteria can destroy the hair roots, causing hair slip (bald patches). In warm conditions this process can speed up to less than 2 hours. • Cut off fat, blood and meat, salt cannot penetrate efficiently through fat. • Wash off blood and dirt, this is where the bacteria starts to multiply. • Soak the skin for a minimum of 4 hours, or overnight in a saturated salt solution (1kg salt per 5 litres of water), Add a spoon of Dettol per 5 Litres water. • Remove the skin from the solution, open and flatten the skin onto a clean surface that has been sprinkled with a thin layer of salt. With the flesh side facing up, cover the skin with salt. Use the same weight of salt as weight of the skin. • Leave the skins in the salt for 3 days, then dry the skin in the sun. • Hides and skins can also be delivered to the tannery in a fresh state but for long distances we recommend that they travel in a salt solution.

If using a courier to get the hides to the tannery it is best to dry the skin properly as one pays on weight. Time Freight has a depot in Dundee and it is really affordable if you can drop the skins at a depot and send to a depot, we will pick them up at the Dundee depot.
Hair slip (bald patches) is a result of a skin having been damaged by bacteria in the curing stage. On arrival of skins at the tannery it is not always possible to see signs of bacterial damage and therefore we cannot be responsible for skins that have hair slip.
